New Art Journaling class!!!

It's time to pull out the watercolor crayons and combine them with a variety of stencils to 

create another page in your ever expanding art journal. 

We'll layer and mix and shade as we color our way through the page and using the stencils, 

we'll add pattern and even more color until the page is just right.

Modeling Paste Canvas tutorial

        Today I am sharing a tutorial that was done for THE ART STUDIO blog.



In my Modeling Paste Fun class I show you how to use Modeling Paste 

in a number of scrapbook,tag and art journal projects and the class is 
chock full of techniques on how you can use modeling paste on all your projects.

Today I want to share a quick step-by-step tutorial on how you can create 
a unique wall hanging using 
modeling paste, acrylic paint and other items often found around your home. 
By simply changing colors, textural elements and more, 
no two pieces will ever be the same.

This hanging can have as little or as much texture as you want. Just play with found objects as you scrape 
into the paste and if you don't like it, then use a palette knife to smooth it over and start again.

Supplies
Base: I am using a 5x8 wooden panel.
Modeling Paste and Palette Knife
Gel Medium
Acrylic paint in your choice of colors
Items to create texture in the paste: I use a fork, bottle cover, sequin waste, and shelf liner
Paintbrush
Solvent ink in contrasting color
Baby wipe or paper towel
Heat Gun

Step One:With a palette knife, cover the base with a coat of modeling paste.

Step Two: Immediately scratch into the paste with found items for texture. I scraped it with a fork, used a bottle cap for to make circles and randomly pushed drywall tape and shelf liner into it. Set the piece aside to dry, preferably overnight. Do not use a heat gun on the wet paste as it will cause it to bubble up.

Step Three: Once the paste is dry, cover most of the piece with your first color of acrylic paint. Now that the paste is dry, you can use your heat gun from here on out. Let the paint dry thoroughly.

Step Four: Cover the paint layer with a layer of gel medium. This will allow you to isolate paint layers as you go so you can wipe off other layers to show what is under. Then let it dry.

Step Five: Add a second color of paint and use a baby wipe or paper towel to wipe some off to let the first layer show through. Let dry and add another layer of gel medium.

Step Six: Continue to add acrylic paint and gel medium in layers until you're happy with the color combination and the results.

Step Seven: Next, I lightly dry brushed white acrylic paint over some of the raised areas to clearly define them.

Step Eight: Last, I rubbed a constrasting solvent ink color over some of the raised area for even more contrast. It's important that you use a solvent ink on the paint and medium layers so it doesn't become a muddy mess. Don't worry, it will dry quickly and not smudge or rub off.

Finish as desired.

The Butterfly

Another art journal page today.

Under Mixed Media Savvy there are all sorts of classes to check out.

Today's page is done on a Gelli print background.

The circle stencil I use is one of my favorites from

Stencil Girl.

The butterflies are die cuts from Kaisercraft.

They are all outlined and smudged with charcoal pencil 

then outlined again with a white gel pen.

Stamping was done over the background using 

Archival ink and a Prima stamp.

The butterfly quote is from Artistic Outpost.

Sing Like the Birds

The chipboard is from Dusty Attic. 

Painted with Lake Mist acrylic paint and then stamped over with a script stamp.

The bird inside is Prima.

Color was provided with Moonshadow mist by Lindy's Stamp Gang 

and Distress Paint in 

Peeled Paint.

Pan Pastel Play

                           Tags are an easy way to get a feel for a new product. 

 They're big enough that you aren't constrained by working on a small space yet small enough that they don't take a lot of product or time.

                                                         

    I used one of the hottest products in the crafting market right now on this tag: Pan Pastel. They're easy and fun to use, they blend seamlessly, can be layered and used with a variety of mediums and best of all, mistakes can be quickly erased.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create a fun tag using several Pan Pastel techniques as well as a bit of stamping.

Supplies
Tag
Pan Pastels in: Ultramarine Blue Tint, Turquoise, Ultramarine Blue Shade, Pthalo Blue Shade, and Diarylide Yellow Shade
Watermark Ink
Stencil
Sequin waste
Pan Pastel applicators or Foam makeup sponges
Assortment of stamps
Black Archival ink

Step One: Place your tag on your work surface and with a sponge applicator, cover the entire tag with Ultramarine Blue Tint. Apply it to the tag in small circular motions. Using the same sponge apply Turquoise Pan Pastel over, but not completely covering the first layer. Again use small circular motions to blend the colors.

Step Two: Take the Pthalo Blue Shade and using small circular motions, apply it in random spots on the tag for highlights.

Step Three: Place the sequin waste onto your tag and using Ultramarine Blue Shade, apply it randomly with your sponge across the tag. Lift and move the sequin waste around the tag and apply more of the Pan Pastel until you're happy with your coverage.

Step Four: Place the stencil onto your tag and with a small dabber sponge and watermark ink, apply the ink through the stencil across the tag. Lift and move the stencil as needed reapplying the ink until you are happy.

Step Five: Lightly apply Ultramarine Blue Shade Pan Pastel across the watermark ink and the Pan Pastel will stick to the watermark ink.

Step Six: Use the sponge to apply Dairylide Yellow Shade randomly across the tag, blending lightly as you go.

Step Seven: Stamp across the tag with Archival ink.

As a finishing step, I lightly distressed the edges of the tag and applied Pthalo Blue Shade. I usually use ink for this step but the Pan Pastels look great, too.
