Today I want to share some samples I created for the Resists class I taught at The Art Studio.

Dream in Color

Today is absolutely nasty, pouring rain and 65 degrees.

Apparently Mother Nature missed the memo that in Aug in North Carolina it isn't supposed to drop below 70.

To top it off I dropped my oldest back off for her second year of college, it's definitely different when she isn't here.

What's the best way to combat all these downers? Why playing in my Art Journal of course.

I started with a background I made up months ago (tip: make up backgrounds whenever and you always will have one to work with) using Lindy's Stamp Gang mists and a bunch of stencils.

Added some Modeling Paste then colored it with Tsukinko inks.

I dug into my old grungebord stash and colored some with Dylusions mist.

The butterfly was from Martha Stewart, it had been sitting on my desk forever...time to use it up.

Feeling better after playing, still wish the sun would come out, but it's ok, it will eventually.

1st Edition

On the Flying Unicorn forum

Adrienne shared a technique called 

DEFINE THE LINES.

I used the tutorial and created this layout yesterday using a piece of Prima paper, cork, Gesso & mists

This is my oldest, and while cleaning my desk I found this piece of paper saying 1st Edition, perfect!

The paper was washed with Gesso and then heavily misted with Crushed Shells and Latte Glimmer Mist from Tattered Angels followed up with Ghostly Gargoyle White by Lindy's Stamp Gang.

My flowers are made from a thin sheet of cork. I stamped on them using a background stamp from Club Scrap and Gesso. The cork was sticky back so it was easy to place my petals on the paper. I outlined them with my black fine tip Sharpie and used Petaloo buttons for the middles.

Black Gesso was brushed through a Crafter's Workshop stencil. Periodically I would flip the stencil to get a reverse image or blotch. Some eyelash fiber and a few flowers from Recollections finish off the page.

Time is a great story teller....

Swirlydoos is shaking things up and now allows anyone to play with anything and join in on the monthly sketch challenges.

This is the sketch for August (designed by Begahuna) and is begging to be used.

I decided though to pull out what was left of my July kit and create my layout.

The pattern papers are all from Prima.

There is stamping and stenciling on top of them.

Lots of Kaisercraft die cuts were layered under the photo and along the edge.

2 different Lindy's Stamp Gang mists were used. Flat Fabio Shouth Shore Sands & Buccaneer Bronze Moonshadow. I love layering the 2 colors over each other.

This sketch is so fun, and now that ANYONE can play why don't you head over and try your hand at it.

Every month there is a butterfly challenge at 

Swirlydoos

using the month's kit.

This month the kit is called Passion Berry and just begged to have some butterflies added to it.

The base paper is from Iron Orchid Design and I swiped some Gesso over to tone down the pink (this kit is LOADED with pink).

Some stamping with a Finnabair background stamp and StazOn ink. I misted with Cotton Candy Pink from Lindy's Stamp Gang and then added some Graphite mist from Tattered Angels (had to flick instead of spray, dang nozzle is clogged again)

Layered the photo over Petaloo lace and Prima crystals.

Added a doily and then cut up a Prima flower vine to frame the pic.

The title are letters cut from another sheet of Iron Orchid Design paper and Kaisercraft stickers.

One of the monthly challenges on the Flying Unicorn forum this month was to include the word LISTEN

on to your layout.

I had the picture I wanted but when I went looking for the stamp I thought I had I couldn't find it.

Plan B-search for quotes with the word listen in them.

I stumbled upon this one:

"The Earth has music for those who LISTEN."

by Shakespeare.

It went perfect with my layout, probably even better than the stamp would have.

I started with a piece of BoBunny paper and swiped Gesso over it with an old credit card.

Then I used 2 different stamps with Tsukineko pigment ink cubes to add some pattern to my paper.

The flowers are Prima.

The quote was printed out, outlined with a graphite pencil and smudged. Then outlined again with a Sharpie pen.

Some Tim Holtz tape and a doily were also layered under the photo.

The photo is of the little one while on vacation this summer in SC.

She traveled all over the beach with her stick looking for things to poke.

I was browsing the web yesterday looking up various sketch challenges.

One of my favorite places to stop and visit is Skissedilla.

I love the sketches and always have the best intentions to play along and then time gets away from me and I miss the deadline.

Not this time!

I am managing to play with Sketch 219 challenge.

This is the amazing sketch that was offered up...

and this was my take on it.

I used only one photo and pretty much followed the rest of the sketch.

I used my Aug kit from Swirlydoos as the base and added on to it from there.

The base paper is Iron Orchard Design.

Gesso was first swiped over with an old credit card.

The watercolor paint heavily watered down and dripped.

Followed by Stephanie Barnard mist in Guava & Dylusions mist in Black Marble.

Drips away!

Modeling paste through a Crafter's Workshop stencil, once dried it was colored with Pan Pastels.

Various background stamps with Archival ink.

Rub ons from several sheets and black ink rubbed through another Crafter's Workshop stencil.

The chipboard is from Blue Fern, covered in Gesso and stamped over with a script stamp and StazOn.

My title was printed out, outlined with graphite pencil, smudged and outlined again with a Sharpie pen.

This was so fun to create.

I'm glad I managed to make the time to play with this sketch.
